Once considered the official capital of the Algarve, the city of Silves is one of the oldest areas in Portugal. Silves retains much of its ancient character, evident in the streets of the old fortress, which today retain a purely medieval layout and structure. The buildings that stretch from the ramparts down to the river are fine examples of bourgeois architecture associated with the prosperity provided by the cork industry.
Monchique is a graceful Algarve village located in a gorge between the peaks of Fóia and Picota. Along its steep, narrow streets, you can admire the whitewashed houses with their typical skirt chimneys. In the center of the village there are several main craft stores selling tapestries and ceramics. The village has a pedestrian park that stretches along a stream and where you can enjoy a stroll along the exclusive footpaths.
Portimão is one of the Algarve’s must-see destinations. The region boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe and is known for its orange cliffs that contrast with the crystal-clear blue-green sea. The town perfectly blends its fishing village character with tourist and cultural attractions and modern, comforting areas.
Alvor is a picturesque village in the Algarve. This charming town still retains many of its Moorish roots due to the fact that the region was controlled by the Moors for several centuries. This fishing village with maritime origins is located on the western part of the south coast of Portugal and its main activities are fishing, restaurants, commerce and tourism. Traditional Algarvian houses, narrow streets and the Ria de Alvor make this a relaxing vacation destination.
Lagos retains the traditional charm left by the Romans and Muslims in its narrow streets and squares. On the site of the old medieval town, the houses show much of their character in the doors and windows, the wrought iron of the balconies and the outdoor spaces. It is in the part of the city built after the maritime expansion that the taste for Art Nouveau can be clearly seen, particularly in the abundant use of tiles.
